Horticulture Apprentice

ROLE OF THE JOB 

 

Please note: Successful applicants must be available for interview week commencing 14th July. These posts will commence in September 2025. 

 

This apprenticeship will last for a duration of 30 months. The training is delivered by Northumberland College and you will be required to attend training at Kirkley Hall NE20 0AQ. 

  

What the candidate will be doing on a day-to-day basis 

The successful candidate will be working with other grounds maintenance and horticultural staff carrying out tasks such as grass cutting, strimming, pruning, planting, sports turf maintenance, litter picking and general cleaning and tidying of areas. 

 

Background on department 

The Tynedale NEAT team consists of approximately 40 staff and works from two depots in the Tyne Valley at Hexham and Prudhoe covering an area of approximately 850 square miles from our southern and western borders with Cumbria and County Durham to our eastern border with Newcastle and Gateshead and our northern border with Scotland. We are responsible for keeping our towns, villages and neighbourhoods clean, tidy and well presented for the benefit of residents and visitors to the area, playing an important part in people's well-being and supporting tourism. 

  

Type of person we are looking for 

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is eager to learn and expand their knowledge and skills through hands-on experience.  

 

Likes to work as part of a team, on a variety of tasks with short deadlines. To be able to work on their own where relevant.

Contract Type 

Fixed Term for duration of apprenticeship training, plus 6 months for End Point Assessment. 


REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB 

 

Maths and English GCSE (or Equivalent) at Grade 4/C or above 

 

Familiar with IT systems, eg. Word, Excel, PowerPoint. 

 

A driving license would be preferable but not essential 


1. To attend all apprenticeship training and successfully complete End Point Assessment 

2. Provide an efficient and effective street cleansing, public convenience and grounds-maintenance service to pre-determined standards and in accordance with 

predetermined schedules. 

3. Liaise with service users and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. 

4. Support the team to complete work within the time, quality and specified service standards. 

5. Ensure that work is performed in a safe and responsible manner in compliance with the relevant risk assessment. 

6. Ensure that machinery, equipment and tools that are used are operated in accordance with manufacturers guidelines and any faults are reported 

7. Work collaboratively with team colleagues to ensure that work plans are achieved, and quality standards are maintained. 

8. Complete all aspects of training relating to the apprenticeship standard
