Civil Engineering Apprentice 

 

Please note: Successful applicants must be available for interview week commencing 14th July. These posts will commence in September 2025. 

 

This apprenticeship will last for a duration of 42 months. The training is delivered by New College Durham and you will be required to attend training at New College Durham, DH1 5ES. 

 

 

What the candidate will be doing on a day-to-day basis 

Design and Asset Management of highways and highway structures and infrastructure. 

  • Assist in the preparation of CAD Drawings
  • Assist with detailed design of highway maintenance and strengthening schemes and new build projects
  • Assist with Design and detailing of highways and highway structures for new build and maintenance schemes.
  • Carry out site measurements, surveys and inspections.
  • Production of technical reports.
  • Responding to client requests for information.
  • Assist with Management of the overall highways asset
  • Day-to-day support to colleagues from other disciplines within the office.

Background on department 

The primary purpose of the Highways & Transport Service is to manage, maintain and improve infrastructure, including highways, for the benefit of those who choose to live, work, visit and invest in Northumberland. 

 

The Highways Design and Programme teams manage highway assets, design, project manage and deliver our own construction and maintenance schemes for highways and highway structures and those for external clients. Internal schemes range from the design of major new highways and highway bridges and structures to the strengthening and refurbishment of existing bridges. We manage and design solutions for unstable slopes and retaining structures and engineered slopes.

Likes to work as part of a team, on a variety of tasks with short deadlines. To be able to work on their own where relevant.

Fixed Term for duration of apprenticeship training, plus 6 months for End Point Assessment. 


REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB  

  • Maths and English GCSE (or Equivalent) at Grade 4/C or above 
  • Familiar with IT systems, eg. Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
