The English as an Additional Language Service

The EAL service provides advice and guidance for schools/collages and early years settings to enable them to support children and young people for whom English is an additional language in response to multilingual pupils’ diverse backgrounds and individual learning goals.

The EAL Service supports educational providers across the county of Northumberland. Our current team consists of six languages, six teachers and two teaching assistants.

The office base for the team is The Riverside Centre in Ashington.

The role

The Low Incidence Need Team would like to appoint an outstanding English as an Additional Language teacher to join our dedicated and enthusiastic EAL team. The ability to speak Dari or Farsi would be advantageous but not essential.

This four-day post is a peripatetic role and includes regular travel to schools across Northumberland, as our multilingual families settle increasingly throughout our northern county.

This position involves working with multilingual pupils who have settled in Northumberland for many different reasons including those seeking refuge from areas of conflict.

A significant amount of our work centres around effective transition and educational outcomes for Afghan refugees, arriving through various resettlement schemes. Dari and Pashto are common languages amongst our families.

The successful candidate will have experience of teaching and assessing multilingual pupils, seeking refuge. This should be based in mainstream settings and across more than one key stage.

In addition, the appointed teacher will have the skills to advise school leaders, teachers and assistants to facilitate pupils’ progression with their English language proficiency and educational goals.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the work of the English as an Additional Language team as we continue to develop our provision for multilingual students across our northern county.
