Technical Officer (Environment and Housing Protection) Private Water supplies
The Environmental Protection Service
The post involves working within the small but specialised Environmental Protection Team, as part of the Council’s Public Protection Service. This Team deals with the regulation and improvement of Local Air Quality, Contaminated Land, Pollution from Industrial processes, commenting through the Planning process on new developments and improvement of our many Private Water Supplies.
The Role
The Team is looking for a Full Time (37hrs) Technical Officer, who will have specific key duties relating to the inspection, sampling and regulation of Private Water supplies across Northumberland. This will involve visiting remote areas of the County to Risk Assess supplies and take multiple water samples for analysis. Manual handling and the ability to walk some distance in rural areas will be necessary. Accurate completion of paperwork and forms will be required and as this is a chargeable service and the post holder will prepare accurate accounts for invoicing and will be involved in ensuring accounts are paid.
The post does not offer any development opportunity beyond the current role and pay scale, although succession planning is an ambition of the Service.
The post is based in Cramlington, South East Northumberland but our offices in Hexham (West) and Alnwick (North) can also be used. Homeworking is also available for the administrative parts of the job.
We are offering:
● A starting salary of £27,344 - £30,151 (Band 6)
● Use of Pool car for work visits.
● General and specific training, including National sampling accreditation.
The successful candidate will possess a demonstrable interest in environmental protection issues and will have good communication and IT skills. Excellent customer care skills and experience of dealing with the general public is also necessary.
A comprehensive knowledge of spreadsheets and updating of data will be essential.
They will have either a science background and / or relevant experience in a similar regulatory role. A high level of organisational and administrative skills are required as well as technical subject specific knowledge of private water supplies and how this affects Public Health.
The post holder will report to our specialist Environmental Health and Technical Officers on a day to day basis and will be managed by our Senior Environmental Protection Officer within the EP Team.
As this post involves travel throughout the County you must be able to meet the transport requirements, having a full clean driving licence.
