ROLE OF THE JOB
What you’ll be doing:
- Developing, monitoring and delivering defined strands of strategic transport programmes, projects and strategies.
- Working with elected members, government departments, the North East Combined Authority (NECA), local councils, communities and stakeholders, partners and communities to secure funding and deliver transport priorities.
- Developing and maintaining transport evidence bases, analysing datasets and producing reports to support strategic decision‑making and transport policy development at local, regional and national levels
- Preparing reports and presenting at Council meetings, public meetings and stakeholder groups, providing professional advice on transport policy implications for Northumberland.
- Managing transport funding streams, budgets, contracts and grant claims, ensuring projects run smoothly and comply with governance, performance and reporting requirements.
- Providing day‑to‑day supervision, coordination and professional guidance to junior colleagues involved in transport projects, supporting their development and effective delivery.
- Representing the Council and contributing to wider corporate planning, service‑wide initiatives and responses to correspondence and enquiries from elected members, partners and the public.
You’ll be part of the Strategic Transport team within the Transport and Environment Directorate. The team develops and delivers transport policy, strategy and projects across the county, working closely with councillors, communities, government departments and external partners.
We’re looking for a motivated professional with a strong understanding of transport planning and policy, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels. You’ll need to be confident managing projects, programmes, budgets and contracts, and skilled at presenting technical information clearly.
An interest in sustainable transport across all user groups would be valuable in this role. The teams main workstreams are around Bus, Rail and Active Travel and experience in one or more of these areas would be desirable.
Based at County Hall, Morpeth, with hybrid working arrangements (home/office/site visits) and occasional evening meetings.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB
- Level 5 qualification.
- Significant experience developing and delivering transport strategies, policies and projects, including securing and managing external funding.
- Analytical, financial and contract management skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to a range of audiences.
- Knowledge of transport legislation, guidance and wider policy contexts (such as land use planning and economic development)
