Road Marking Apprentice 

 

Please note: Successful applicants must be available for interview week commencing 14th July. These posts will commence in September 2025. 

 

This apprenticeship will last for a duration of 24 months. The training is delivered by Derwentside College and you will be required to attend training at Derwentside College, DH8 5EE. 

 

 

Apprenticeship Training 

You will complete a Level 2 Highways maintenance skilled operative apprenticeship. Upon completion you will complete an NVQ Level 2 in Road Marking. 

 

What the candidate will be doing on a day-to-day basis 

As a Road Markings Apprentice, you will assist experienced teams in preparing and applying road markings across a variety of sites in Northumberland. Your tasks will include surface preparation, learning how to operate line marking machinery, setting out road markings to specification, and adhering to health and safety protocols. You’ll gain hands-on experience and training in highway maintenance and traffic management while contributing to the safety and efficiency of Northumberland’s roads. 

 

Background on department 

The Road Markings team is part of the Highways department within Northumberland County Council. Our team is responsible for the upkeep and safety of the county's extensive road network. We are a dedicated and supportive team that works collaboratively to deliver high-quality services across both rural and urban areas. Apprentices are a valued part of our workforce, and we are committed to nurturing and developing talent from within. 

 

Type of person we are looking for 

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is eager to learn and expand their knowledge and skills through hands-on experience.  

 

Enjoys working as part of a team, on a variety of tasks with short deadlines. To be able to work on their own where relevant. 

 

Location 

Various locations across Northumberland, with the wagon based in Haltwhistle Depot 


Salary 

National Apprenticeship Framework  

 

Contract Type 

Fixed Term for duration of apprenticeship training, plus 6 months for End Point Assessment. 


REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB 

  • Maths and English GCSE (or Equivalent) at Grade 4/C or above 
  • Familiar with IT systems, eg. Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions 
  • A valid UK driving license is desirable but not essential
