Job Title: Refuse Loader 

Salary Rate: £11.78ph – £11.98ph

Job Purpose

Contribute to the provision of an efficient and effective refuse collection & recycling service.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide efficient refuse collection and recycling service in accordance with schedules and Council policy.
  • Collect various types of waste, including household, industrial, and clinical waste, as well as emptying bins and removing dead animals.
  • Liaise with service users and the public courteously, providing advice and information on waste services when required.
  • Ensure work is completed within specified service standards and timeframes.
  • Perform work safely and responsibly, adhering to relevant risk assessments.
  • Complete paperwork to record any problems encountered during collections and report faults with equipment.
  • Operate machinery, equipment, and tools in accordance with manufacturers' guidelines.
  • Collaborate with team colleagues to achieve work plans and maintain quality standards.
  • Respond to and resolve simple problems, referring complex issues to immediate supervisor.
  • Provide cover for other frontline Local Services as required.

 

Work Arrangements:

Physical requirements: Walking long distances, extensive lifting, pulling, and pushing. 

Transport requirements: Occasional travel to other work sites for cover or training. 

Working patterns: Ad Hoc, temporary. Normal working week, Monday to Thursday, with early mornings (7am starts), occasional evenings, weekends, and Bank Holiday working. 

Working conditions: Outdoor work in all weathers and traffic conditions, including hazardous and unpleasant waste reception facilities.

Note: Must be available to start at 7am

 

Experience required:

  • Relevant knowledge of tasks and equipment operation.
  • NVQ 2 in Waste Management or equivalent.
  • Awareness of Health & Safety legislation.
  • Accredited training in safe manual handling techniques.
  • Previous relevant experience.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Basic record-keeping skills.
  • Strength, dexterity, and coordination for manual work.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in hazardous environments.
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Committed to public service ethics, quality, and customer service.
  • Adaptable and supportive in team working.
  • Willingness to undertake job-related training.

 

Northumberland County Council’s Staff Bank provides a pool of highly skilled temporary workers who are looking for a long-term placement, or who want to work flexibly within the council. If a team needs support due to sickness, common staff shortages, or general vacancies, they call upon registered bank members to fill available assignments. These can be filled via a long-term assignment for up to 12 months or on an ad hoc basis.

The Staff Bank is managed by the Temporary Staffing Team, who you can contact via temporarystaffing@northumberland.gov.uk.
