Northumberland County Council’s Staff Bank provides a pool of highly skilled temporary workers who are looking for a long-term placement, or who want to work flexibly within the council. If a team needs support due to sickness, common staff shortages, or general vacancies, they call upon registered bank members to fill available assignments. These can be filled via a long-term assignment for up to 12 months or on an ad hoc basis. 

 

Job Title: Refuse HGV Driver / Loader

Salary Range: £24,294 - £25,979

Various Ad Hoc, Temporary Shifts

 

Job Purpose:

Drive an HGV, load refuse, and supervise a small team of Refuse Loaders to provide efficient refuse collection and recycling service.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drive HGV Refuse Vehicle, load refuse, and supervise team to meet service objectives and quality standards.
  • Oversee refuse collection & recycling services according to schedules and Council policy.
  • Collect clinical waste, empty bins, and remove dead animals using appropriate vehicles.
  • Carry out routine vehicle checks, maintenance, and paperwork accurately.
  • Ensure safety of team and public, and provide courteous service.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to achieve work plans and maintain standards.

 

Experience Required:

  • HGV Driving Licence category C or above (no more than 3 points)
  • Knowledge of legislation and regulations relating to driving.
  • Awareness of Health & Safety legislation and its application.
  • Experience in refuse collection and vehicle checks.
  • Able to understand and follow instructions.
  • Basic record keeping skills.
  • Able to plan, organise, and prioritise resources and staff.
  • Good communication skills and ability to handle issues calmly.
  • Willingness to undertake job related training.
