ROLE OF THE JOB
We’re seeking a Lead Front-End Developer to shape the technical direction of our digital services. You’ll lead multiple development teams, define engineering standards, and drive the delivery of scalable, accessible web platforms.
Working across projects, you’ll collaborate with service owners, delivery managers, and user researchers to ensure our services meet the highest standards of usability, security, and performance. You’ll be responsible for system architecture, reusable design systems, and embedding modern development practices across teams.
This role is strategic and influential, requiring deep technical expertise and leadership experience. You’ll play a key role in transforming how over 300,000 residents engage with council services, helping Northumberland become a leader in digital public service delivery.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB
- Leadership & Technical Expertise: Extensive experience leading front-end teams, setting technical direction, and embedding engineering standards. Supports team development and drives continuous improvement.
- Front-End Development: Technical expertise in secure, scalable front-end development and cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure).
- User-Centred Design & Accessibility: Proven ability to lead the creation of inclusive, user-focused services at scale, including the development and governance of reusable design systems.
- System Design & Delivery: Skilled in designing complex systems, overseeing integration and deployment, implementing automated testing, and ensuring performance, security, and maintainability. Delivers high-quality outcomes under pressure.
