Job Information

The Service

Northumberland Skills empowers residents through a wide range of full- and part-time courses, apprenticeships, and tailored employability support. Our dedicated Employability Service plays a key role in helping individuals overcome barriers to work, offering personalised guidance that makes a real difference in people’s lives helping residents build brighter, more independent futures.

About the Role

We’re seeking a motivated and performance focused Employment Adviser to support refugees in Northumberland into suitable employment.

You’ll provide tailored information, advice and guidance to help participants overcome barriers not fully addressed by mainstream services, enabling them to build fulfilling, independent lives. Building and maintaining strong networks including employers, you will drive referrals and create opportunities for participants, ensuring they have access to a wide range of resources that will prepare your participant and ultimately help them to find work in the UK. Your dedication and commitment will be instrumental in achieving targets and upholding exceptional quality standards to deliver outstanding outcomes for each participant.

You will be based primarily in the Southeast but will travel across the County as needed working with employer's and partner organisations, so it is essential that you can meet the transport requirements of the post.

This is a fixed term post for 12 months.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Information, Advice, and Guidance (IAG) to participants.
  • Conduct employment-focused assessments and create personalised action plans.
  • Source vocational training, volunteering, and work placements.
  • Support with job applications, CVs, cover letters, and interview preparation.
  • Engage employers to promote inclusive recruitment and fill vacancies.
  • Track referrals, gather feedback, and contribute to service improvement.
  • Collaborate with partners including DWP, ESOL and housing providers, VCS, and Council services.

Essential Requirements:

  • Understanding of barriers to employment, especially for those with limited English.
  • Awareness of employer recruitment needs and inclusive employment
  • Experience in advice, guidance, and managing a client caseload.
  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Ability to deliver employability support, including workshops on job search and work readiness.
  • Knowledge of local services for refugees and inactive residents.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

The post holder will work to a variety of performance targets based on the progression outcomes of clients such as successful completion of training courses, voluntary and work placements and achieving and sustaining paid employment. You must manage your workload effectively, work autonomously and as part of a team, and be responsive to new demands.
