Communications and Marketing Officer

Location: County Hall, Morpeth

Working arrangements:  Hybrid working (weekly office attendance expected). Driving licence essential.

Help shape the way we communicate with 320,000+ people across Northumberland.

We're looking for an experienced communications and marketing officer to join our award-winning team to work across press, social media, web and marketing campaigns.


Join a creative, high-impact team

You'll help deliver campaigns that matter to local people – from launching major infrastructure projects to [ recruiting Foster Carers] or tackling anti-social behaviour. You’ll work closely with councillors, directors, frontline services, emergency services and partners to get the message right.

 

Every day is different. You could be:

  • Arranging interviews with local or national media.
  • Writing social media, press or web content.
  • Planning a marketing campaign.
  • Filming and editing video.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll need creativity, sound judgement and strong writing skills.

    What you’ll do

  • Plan and deliver on internal/external communications and marketing campaigns that support council priorities.
  • Write clear, user-centred content for social media, website, newsletters and press.
  • Work with local, regional and national media to secure coverage and build strong relationships.
  • Create short-form video, graphics and photography using tools like Canva, Photoshop and Premiere.
  • Support emergency and urgent communications – including being on-call.
  • Monitor results and improve how we work, based on data and feedback.
  • Support colleagues with clear effective messaging - including during fast-paced, urgent or emergency situations.

What we're looking for

  • Excellent user-centred writing skills.
  • Experience working with press or media outlets.
  • Ability to lead on projects, manage competing deadlines and stay calm under pressure.
  • Experience working with senior leaders or in high-profile settings.
  • A collaborative team player who’s always looking to improve.
  • Understanding of local government or the ability to learn quickly.
  • Experience of out-of-hours or on-call press work is helpful but not essential.
