Borderlands Administrator Apprentice
Please note: Successful applicants must be available for interview week commencing 14th July. These posts will commence in September 2025.
This apprenticeship will last for a duration of 24 months. The training is delivered by Northumberland Skills and you will be required to attend training at Morpeth Leisure Centre, NE61 1SR.
What the candidate will be doing on a day-to-day basis
The successful candidate in this role will be able to be involved in a range of activities each day including:
- Finding dates, arranging, and preparing agendas packs of papers for our main meetings.
- Setting up an annual programme of meetings and a forward plan for decisions to be made in these meetings.
- Monitoring our mailbox and passing on enquiries to the right people.
- Making arrangements for varied meetings as needed including working with people in other councils and central Government, private businesses and charities.
- Making sure that our team plans and action plans are updated by the team and reminding people as needed.
- Taking minutes for our main meetings.
- Monitoring our team budget (approximately £750,000 each year) and working with others in the team to process invoices and make sure these are paid on time.
- There will also be opportunities to be involved in our annual conferences and events and work with others to see more about project development, delivery and claim payments to understand more about the wider work of the team.
Background on department
The Borderlands Programme Management Office (PMO) is a small team of nine people who are delivering over £452m of funding to attract more visitors, supporting more jobs and providing new opportunities for people and businesses in our area.
Although employed through Northumberland County Council we work across the south of Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway and Scottish Borders) and the north of England (Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness) providing an opportunity to be part of something different and on a large scale but with a real impact in local places.
The team is highly visible working to the Partnership Board of the five local authority leaders and private sector representatives and giving an opportunity to work across a wide range of administrative activities as well as get a chance to be involved with and see projects being delivered and how we deliver large events for outside partners.
Type of person we are looking for
For this role we are looking for someone who is enthusiastic and wants to learn more and expand their skills.
This is particularly appropriate for someone who has a good eye for detail and record keeping, works well with a wide range of people and is flexible and able to meet short deadlines where required.
The role will suit someone looking for a wide-ranging administration role in a unique team which offers changes to be involved in other aspects of work particularly relating to working in partnership and growing the economy.
Location
This post will be hybrid with a mixture of home working and working from County Hall, Morpeth. There will also be opportunities to visit other areas of the Borderlands for projects and meetings.

Fixed Term for duration of apprenticeship training, plus 6 months for End Point Assessment.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB
To be successful in this role you will need:
- A good standard of English and Maths skills
- Ability to manage your workload in a systematic way and prioritise work to meet deadlines
- Ability to use office applications especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to form appropriate relationship quickly and work professionally with a wide range of people
- Ability to take accurate written notes and summarise complex issues clearly and succinctly.
